Laser-induced rotation of a levitated sample in vacuum

چکیده
A method of systematically controlling the rotational state of a sample levitated in a high vacuum using the photon pressure is described. A zirconium sphere was levitated in the high-temperature electrostatic levitator and it was rotated by irradiating it with a narrow beam of a high-power laser on a spot off the center of mass. While the laser beam heated the sample, it also rotated the sample with a torque that was proportional both to the laser power and the length of the torque arm. A simple theoretical basis was given and its validity was demonstrated using a solid zirconium sphere at ;2000 K. This method will be useful to systematically control the rotational state of a levitated sample for the containerless materials processing at high temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~99!04712-7#

Search for millicharged particles using optically levitated microspheres.
We report results from a search for stable particles with charge ≳10^{-5}e in bulk matter using levitated dielectric microspheres in high vacuum. No evidence for such particles was found in a total sample of 1.4 ng, providing an upper limit on the abundance per nucleon of 2.5×10^{-14} at the 95% confidence level for the material tested. These results provide the first direct search for single p...

We report on the design, construction, and characterisation of a new class of in-vacuo optical levitation trap optimised for use in high-intensity, high-energy laser interaction experiments. The system uses a focused, vertically propagating continuous wave laser beam to capture and manipulate micro-targets by photon momentum transfer at much longer working distances than commonly used by optica...

Quantum state preparation of mesoscopic objects is a powerful playground for the elucidation of many physical principles. The field of cavity optomechanics aims to create these states through laser cooling and by minimizing state decoherence. Here we demonstrate simultaneous optical trapping and rotation of a birefringent microparticle in vacuum using a circularly polarized trapping laser beam-...

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is used to study hightemperature plasma confined by the magnetic field produced by a high-current superconducting ring. Multiple-frequency ECRH heats and sustains plasma discharges for long, quasi-steady periods, and conditions of high plasma beta are reached by adjusting the rate of neutral fueling. When the superconducting ring is levitated by attraction ...
